Mazda sold 109,226 vehicles worldwide in September 2026, up 11.3% on the same month last year, helped by a strong month in the USA. Global production went the other way, falling 7.9% to 99,118 units. Across April to September, the first half of Mazda’s financial year, both output and sales were higher than a year earlier.

Mazda has published its production and sales figures for September 2026 and for the six months from April to September. The results are mixed. Sales were up sharply in September, but output at its Japanese plants fell over the same period.

Sales up, led by the USA

Mazda sold 109,226 vehicles globally in September, 11.3% more than in September 2025. The USA did most of the work. Mazda sold 34,519 units there, an increase of 31.9% year on year.

In Japan, the company sold 15,053 vehicles in September, up 10.4%.

For April to September as a whole, global sales reached 616,776 units, a modest 1.2% rise. Domestic sales over the six months came to 72,324 units, up 6.1%.

Japanese production falls in September

Mazda built 99,118 vehicles worldwide in September, 7.9% fewer than a year earlier. The fall came from Japan, where output dropped 13.6% to 59,110 units. Overseas plants built 40,008 vehicles, up 1.9%.

Exports from Japan followed the same pattern. They totalled 47,966 units in September, down 13.1%.

A stronger first half overall

The six-month picture looks better than September alone. Between April and September, global production rose 6.3% to 590,081 units. Domestic output grew 7.7% to 366,954 units, and overseas production rose 3.9% to 223,127 units.

Exports from Japan over the period reached 309,023 units, up 6.2%. North America was the largest destination by a wide margin, taking 152,803 units, an increase of 11.1%.

What it means

April to September is the first half of Mazda’s financial year, which runs to the end of March. These figures therefore give an early view of how the smaller Japanese maker is doing this year. North America is clearly its most important market, both as the main export destination and through the September sales jump in the USA. The drop in Japanese production and exports in September contrasts with growth for the half-year as a whole. Mazda’s summary does not explain the decline.
