Mazda says the all-new CX-5 equipped with Google built-in now supports Google Gemini, Google’s AI assistant. The update is free through Google Play and covers US, Canadian, European and Japanese-specification cars. Drivers can now ask in everyday language for navigation, climate and media functions instead of learning fixed voice commands.

A free update for four markets

Mazda Motor Corporation has confirmed that Google Gemini is now available on the all-new Mazda CX-5 when the car has Google built-in. The feature applies to the US, Canadian, European and Japanese specifications of the SUV. Owners get it as a free update through Google Play.

There are conditions. Mazda says that only certain vehicle functions can be controlled by Gemini and that some connected apps must be set up first. It also says compatibility and availability vary and that the service is for users aged 18 and over.

No set commands to learn

Older in-car voice systems usually need the driver to use set phrases. According to Mazda, Gemini follows the flow of a conversation and works out what the driver wants, so there are no commands to memorise. The company gives the example of a driver saying “It’s cold inside and the windows are fogged up”. Gemini then changes the climate control to deal with it.

Mazda presents this as part of its human-centred approach to vehicle development. The company says it is building a human-machine interface that keeps the driver’s eye movement and workload to a minimum, so they can concentrate on the road.

Navigation that understands requests

As well as setting destinations in Google Maps, drivers can ask for real-time traffic information, details about a destination and their estimated arrival time. Gemini can also search for stops that meet more specific criteria. Mazda’s example is “a highly rated café with outdoor seating along the route”.

Media and conversation

For music, drivers don’t need to name a particular track. They can ask Gemini to play something that suits their mood or what they are doing. They can also ask questions about the song that is playing or pick up an audiobook where they left off.

The update also adds Gemini Live, which allows open-ended conversation while driving. Mazda suggests using it to plan a family trip or to rehearse a difficult work conversation.

What it means

The update comes over the air through Google Play, so existing CX-5 owners with Google built-in do not need to visit a dealer. It shows how infotainment features can now be added after a car has been sold. For buyers comparing family SUVs, the voice assistant and Google services built into the car are becoming more relevant to the decision.
