Toyota Motor Europe sold 936,042 Toyota and Lexus vehicles between January and September 2026, which it says is an all-time record for the period. Overall volume rose only 0.6% year-on-year, but the mix has shifted: electrified models made up 87% of sales, and battery electric registrations more than doubled to 104,832 units.
Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has published its sales figures for the first nine months of 2026. Combined Toyota and Lexus deliveries reached 936,042 vehicles, up 0.6% on the same period last year, for a European market share of 7.1%. The company describes the total as an all-time record for January to September.
The headline number is barely higher than last year’s. The bigger change is in what TME is selling.
Electrified models now dominate
According to TME, electrified vehicle sales reached a record 813,623 units, up 13% year-on-year. They now account for 87% of total volume, 10 percentage points more than a year earlier. The share varies by region: 92% in Western Europe, 84% in Central Europe and 59% in Eastern Europe, a region that in TME’s reporting covers Kazakhstan, the Caucasus, Ukraine, Turkey and Israel.
Battery electric vehicles grew fastest. TME sold 104,832 BEVs in the nine months, an increase of 136%. For a manufacturer long associated with self-charging hybrids rather than pure EVs, that is a notable change in pace.
The company credits demand for its newer electric models and also points to hybrid growth. It names the Aygo X Hybrid, launched last year, as the model bringing hybrid technology to more customers, while the Toyota C-HR+, bZ4X and bZ4X Touring are driving its BEV growth in Europe.
Toyota holds second place among passenger car brands
The Toyota brand sold 873,445 vehicles, up 0.9%, and the company says it remains Europe’s second best-selling passenger car brand. Its electrified share rose 11 percentage points to 86%, from 753,665 electrified sales.
The Yaris Cross Hybrid was again the brand’s best-seller with 155,066 units, about 18% of Toyota sales. Behind it came the Yaris range (125,260), the Corolla range (113,583), the Toyota C-HR range (101,139), the Aygo X range (82,581) and the RAV4 range (41,697).
Toyota-brand BEV sales rose 151% to 98,148 units. The recently launched C-HR+ led with 29,616 sales, ahead of the bZ4X on 26,270. The Urban Cruiser and bZ4X Touring followed.
Vans and pick-ups go electric too
Toyota Professional, the commercial vehicle arm covering the Hilux and Proace families, recorded 113,352 sales. Electric versions grew strongly from a small base. Sales of the battery electric Proace rose 25% and the Proace City BEV 27%. The Proace Max BEV jumped 149% to 3,379 units, and the new Hilux BEV, the first all-electric version of the pick-up, logged 441 sales.
Lexus slips slightly overall
Lexus was the one part of the group to shrink. It sold 62,597 vehicles, down 4% year-on-year, and its electrified sales fell 2% to 59,958 units. Electrified models still make up 96% of Lexus sales, and the share is 100% in both Western and Central Europe.
The compact LBX Hybrid stayed the brand’s top seller with 20,512 units, followed by the NX range (19,032), RX (6,177), UX (5,807) and the electric RZ (5,654). RZ sales rose 47%, and RX Plug-in Hybrid sales increased by 8%.
What it means
Toyota was slow to commit to battery electric cars compared with many European rivals. These figures suggest its multi-powertrain strategy is now producing significant BEV volume alongside its hybrids. BEVs still make up just over a tenth of TME’s total sales, though, and hybrids remain the core of its business.
For context, TME sold 1,229,000 vehicles in Europe across the whole of 2025, a 7.2% market share. The nine-month share of 7.1% puts it on a similar footing for 2026.
