Audi has taken the wraps off the A2 e-tron in Paris, reviving a name last associated with the brand’s early efficiency experiments. The all-electric compact claims consumption of 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometres and a WLTP range of up to 646 km (401 miles), which Audi says makes it the most efficient car it has ever built. CEO Gernot Döllner presented the model as a car developed specifically around European customers, engineered in Germany and produced in Ingolstadt.
Audi chose Paris for the reveal of the A2 e-tron, a fully electric compact that the company positions as its entry point into the segment. Chief executive Gernot Döllner presented the car on 8 September 2026, framing it as a concrete example of the brand’s ongoing renewal rather than a concept study.
Efficiency as the starting point
The headline number is consumption: 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometres, which Audi states makes the A2 e-tron the most efficient car in its history. Combined with a drag coefficient of 0.24, that figure translates into a WLTP range of up to 646 km (401 miles).
Audi’s argument is that efficiency is not an abstract engineering metric but a usability one — a car that uses less energy needs charging less often and makes fewer stops on a long journey. Döllner said the team treated it as the guiding principle rather than one target among many.
“If we want to bring back the idea of the A2 for a new era, efficiency cannot be one requirement among many. It has to be the leading principle. The result is the most efficient Audi we have ever built. It translates directly into everyday usability: more range, less charging, fewer stops.”
A different reading of premium
Döllner also used the launch to push back on the idea that a premium electric car has to be defined by size and output. “Premium cannot just mean more — more power, more size, more resources,” he said. “It has to mean using resources more intelligently, without compromising on quality, technology or the customer experience.”
That positioning matters commercially. The compact class is where European buyers are most sensitive to purchase price and running costs, and where affordable electric models from Renault, Citroën and Volkswagen have been gathering momentum. An efficiency-led premium compact is a narrower pitch than a big-battery flagship, and it depends on the price Audi eventually attaches to it — a figure the company has not yet disclosed.
Built in Ingolstadt, aimed at Europe
Audi is explicit that the A2 e-tron was not designed as a global one-size-fits-all product. “We developed the A2 e-tron with a clear focus on Europe — on the way people live, drive and use their cars here,” Döllner said. “It’s designed to meet the needs of European customers — developed in Germany, and built in Ingolstadt.”
He added that the car is intended to fit around existing habits rather than demand new ones: “It does not ask customers to adapt their lives to electric mobility. It adapts electric mobility to their lives.”
What it means
For buyers, the interesting part of this reveal is what Audi has chosen to lead with. There is no power output, no acceleration time and no top speed in the announcement — the company is selling the car on how little energy it uses. Whether that lands will depend on the specifications Audi has still to publish, above all battery capacity, charging performance and price.
