Audi is marking 30 years of the A3, the compact model that first appeared at the 1996 Paris Motor Show. Over four generations, more than six million examples have left the production line, and the car has been delivered to over 100 countries. The company says the A3 created the premium compact class, a segment it still shares with rivals such as the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
From three-door coupé look to 17 variants
The A3 began in 1996 as a single three-door hatchback. The current fourth generation is offered in 17 model and drive variants, according to Audi. Today’s range includes the Sportback, the Sedan and the raised allstreet crossover. Buyers can choose petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid power, and the S3 and RS 3 sit at the top of the line-up.
The A3 has been built in Ingolstadt from the start. Audi added production at its Brazilian plant in São José dos Pinhais in 1999. In the early 2000s, output expanded to the Audi Hungaria factory in Győr. The manufacturer counts the A3 among the most successful model series in its history.
First generation (8L), 1996–2003
The original car combined a rising shoulder line, strong C-pillars and a low glasshouse to give a coupé-like profile. Audi offered three equipment lines: Attraction, the sportier Ambition and the comfort-focused Ambiente. Four petrol and four diesel engines were available over the model’s life.
In September 1998, quattro all-wheel drive arrived in the compact class for the first time. It used an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch at the input to the rear differential, designed for cars with transverse engines. In early 1999, a five-door body joined the range, along with the first S3. That car used a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with two intercoolers, rated at 154 kW (210 PS), plus a six-speed manual gearbox, 17-inch wheels and Recaro sports seats. In autumn 2001, output rose to 165 kW (225 PS).
Second generation (8P), 2003–2013
The second A3 grew in length, width and wheelbase, which freed up more cabin space. The range included four- and six-cylinder engines, and the most powerful versions offered a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A new four-link independent rear suspension and electromechanical steering were added to the chassis.
The A3 Sportback followed in September 2004. Its wheelbase was 65 mm (2.6 in) longer than the earlier five-door’s, and it was the first A3 with the Singleframe grille. Audi says the Sportback remains the A3’s best-selling body style. In 2008, the S3 became available as a Sportback with a 2.0-litre turbo producing 195 kW (265 PS). The same year saw the launch of the fabric-roofed A3 Cabriolet. In 2011, the first RS 3 brought a 250 kW (340 PS) five-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive to the range.
Third generation (8V), 2012–2020
The 8V was the first Audi built on the Volkswagen Group’s modular transverse matrix (MQB). It used aluminium to cut body weight and introduced the MMI rotary/push-button controller to the compact class. It also brought adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist from larger Audis. Smaller turbocharged engines replaced larger-displacement units, and cylinder-on-demand technology could shut down two of the four cylinders under part load.
The A3 Sedan arrived in 2013, aimed in particular at customers outside Europe. The A3 Sportback e-tron followed in 2014 as Audi’s first compact plug-in hybrid. After the RS 3 Sportback was raised to 270 kW (367 PS), the 2016 RS 3 Sedan became the first compact Audi saloon with an RS badge, powered by a 2.5 TFSI engine rated at 294 kW (400 PS).
Fourth generation (8Y), since 2020
The current A3 launched in 2020 with digital daytime running lights, a touch-based control concept and, on some engines, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The 2021 RS 3 replaced the earlier Haldex system with a torque splitter that varies drive between the rear wheels. Audi quotes 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 290 km/h (180 mph), figures the company describes as class-leading.
In 2024, the A3 allstreet added a crossover look and 3 cm (1.2 in) more ground clearance than the Sportback. The same year, the updated S3 received 245 kW (333 PS), the torque splitter, a revised front axle and retuned steering.
