Volkswagen has revealed the ID. Tiguan, an all-electric mid-size SUV that will replace both the ID.4 and the ID.5 from early 2027. It is built on the updated MEB+ platform, with up to 220 kW and a claimed WLTP range of up to 600 km (373 miles). Pre-sales open in Germany and many other European countries on 13 October, with prices from 42,695 euros.
Volkswagen is putting its most important nameplate on an electric car. The new ID. Tiguan replaces two models at once, the ID.4 and the coupé-styled ID.5. According to the company, more than 950,000 of those two have been built. The petrol, diesel and hybrid Tiguan stays on sale, so buyers will be able to choose between the two cars side by side from 2027.
The electric model will be built in Emden, and the combustion-engined Tiguan will continue to come from Wolfsburg. Volkswagen calls the ID. Tiguan one of its most important electric models for the years ahead.
“The Tiguan is our best-selling model worldwide, and the ID.4 and ID.5 are among our most successful electric cars. The ID. Tiguan brings these two success stories together. A pure, confident design with the presence of a vehicle from the next class up, intuitive operation and, thanks to MEB+, a range of up to 600 kilometres: a new benchmark for our electric SUVs made in Germany. Together with the Tiguan from Wolfsburg, the ID. Tiguan from Emden is part of one of the strongest SUV duos in Europe.” – Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand
Three power outputs, two battery sizes
Volkswagen will sell the ID. Tiguan with three drivetrains:
- Rear-wheel drive, 140 kW (190 PS), 58 kWh battery
- Rear-wheel drive, 210 kW (286 PS), 77 kWh battery
- 4MOTION all-wheel drive, 220 kW (299 PS), 77 kWh battery
The maker quotes a WLTP range of up to 600 km (373 miles) for the most range-favourable specification. Combined consumption is 16.3–14.9 kWh/100 km for the 140 kW version, 16.2–14.6 kWh/100 km for the 210 kW version and 17.2–15.7 kWh/100 km for the 220 kW all-wheel-drive model.
Towing capacity is 1,800 kg (3,968 lb) with the smaller battery and 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) with the larger one. Volkswagen has not yet published acceleration, top speed or charging figures.
A sharper SUV shape
The ID.4 had soft crossover styling. The ID. Tiguan has a more upright, squarer SUV body, and Volkswagen says it was drawn under its new “Pure Positive” design language. The brand says it wants the car to look like it belongs in the class above. One practical change: conventional pull-style door handles are back.
There is room for five. The boot holds up to 534 litres (18.9 cu ft), and a 32-litre (1.1 cu ft) frunk under the bonnet adds extra storage.
Physical buttons return
Inside, Volkswagen has gone back to physical controls after criticism of the touch-sensitive surfaces in earlier ID. models. The basic climate functions now sit on a row of buttons in the centre console. The steering wheel has real buttons instead of touch pads, and a rotary controller handles audio volume and track or station changes. The window switches in the driver’s door have also been redesigned.
The screens are new too: a 10-inch (25.4 cm) driver display and a 15-inch (38.1 cm) central touchscreen. A 12-inch (30.5 cm) passenger display is optional, and Volkswagen says this is the first time one has been offered in a European Volkswagen. A privacy mode hides the passenger screen from the driver, and the passenger can listen through Bluetooth headphones.
There is also a lighter touch. A “Retro” mode, activated from the steering wheel, shows the blue-and-red dials of the Golf IV in the driver display. The rev counter is replaced by a power meter. The central screen offers a “virtual garage” with six classic Volkswagens to pick from, including the Golf I, Golf II Country, Tiguan I and Race Touareg.
Assistance and options
One-pedal driving is standard. The optional Connected Travel Assist can carry out assisted lane changes on motorways and stop the car at red traffic lights, within system limits. Other options include:
- Electrically adjustable front seats with massage, memory and ventilation
- A 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system
- A panoramic sunroof
- Two Qi2 wireless charging pads
- A shareable smartphone Digital Key
- A PowerSocket adapter for vehicle-to-load use
The ID. Tiguan comes in four trim levels: Trend, Life, Style and R-Line.
What it means
The Tiguan name carries more weight than the ID.4 badge, and Volkswagen is using it to strengthen its position in Europe’s busiest segment. The return of physical buttons addresses one of the most common complaints about the first generation of ID. models.
