Volkswagen is extending its ID. naming strategy to its biggest seller: the all-electric ID. Tiguan will be revealed in early October and reach markets at the beginning of 2027. It takes over from the ID.4 and ID.5 while the combustion and hybrid Tiguan continues alongside it. The images released so far show a near-production concept car that is not yet on sale.
Volkswagen has announced that the ID. Tiguan will make its world premiere in early October, with market launch scheduled for the beginning of 2027. Until the reveal, the SUV continues testing under camouflage wrap.
The name is the point of the exercise. After the ID. Polo and the ID. Cross, the Tiguan becomes the third established Volkswagen model name to be carried over to an electric car. The company says the familiar badges are meant to give buyers clearer orientation, with each name standing for a defined vehicle concept rather than a numbered model line.
Replacing the ID.4 and ID.5
The ID. Tiguan will succeed the ID.4 and its fastback sibling, the ID.5. Both have been among Volkswagen’s strongest electric sellers, with more than 950,000 units delivered since 2021, according to the manufacturer.
Volkswagen describes the ID. Tiguan as a new-generation electric SUV with a completely new design, and states that its visual presence is closer to that of a vehicle from the segment above. No technical specifications — power, battery capacity, range or charging figures — have been released at this stage.
Petrol and electric side by side
Unlike the direct replacement strategy used elsewhere, the electric model will not push out the existing car. The combustion and plug-in hybrid Tiguan stays in the range, giving Volkswagen two parallel offers in the same segment. The company frames this as covering different powertrain preferences among its customers.
That matters commercially. Volkswagen states the Tiguan is currently the best-selling model worldwide both for the Volkswagen brand and for the Volkswagen Group, and that combined deliveries of the Tiguan and its Tayron sister model passed one million units last year. Those two are offered with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid power.
What the brand says
“More than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles produced demonstrate the strength and trust associated with this model name. The Tiguan represents a versatile, premium vehicle and embodies the essence of True Volkswagen. With the ID. Tiguan, we are carrying this product promise into the electric future. The all-electric model builds on the strengths of the bestseller and offers premium design, generous space, intuitive operation and innovative technologies. Together, both models form a strong offering for our customers’ different powertrain preferences.”
The words are those of Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, Head of Brand Group Core and a member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.
What it means for buyers
For anyone shopping in Europe’s most crowded segment, the practical effect is choice without a deadline: the petrol and hybrid Tiguan is not being retired to make room. For Volkswagen, attaching its highest-volume nameplate to an electric car is a bigger bet than the ID.4 ever was — the Tiguan name carries the expectations of 8.3 million cars behind it.
Pricing, equipment lines and technical data remain open until the premiere. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed a specific reveal date beyond early October, and the ID. Tiguan reaches markets at the beginning of 2027.
