The Octavia is the first Škoda to offer a full hybrid powertrain. It is available for both the hatchback and the estate, with system outputs of 100 kW or 125 kW. The battery never needs plugging in, and the car can drive short distances on electric power alone. Orders open in October, and first deliveries are planned for December 2026.

Škoda has added another powertrain to the Octavia line-up. The best-selling family car is now the first model in the brand’s range to come with a full hybrid system. The battery charges itself while the car is driven, so there is no cable and no charging point involved.

The hybrid comes with the hatchback and estate bodies in Selection and Sportline trims. Škoda says it widens what it calls its broadest-ever powertrain portfolio.

How the hybrid system works

The setup combines a 1.5 TSI evo2 petrol engine with two electric motors, a single-speed automatic transmission and an automatic clutch. The clutch can link the engine directly to the front wheels.

The smaller electric motor mainly acts as a generator and also starts the petrol engine. The larger traction motor drives the front wheels and recovers energy under braking. Škoda calls the system series-parallel. It switches between three operating modes on its own:

  • All-electric: the traction motor draws on the battery alone, for up to approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) without starting the engine.
  • Series hybrid: the petrol engine drives the generator, which supplies electricity to the traction motor. This mode is mainly used at speeds up to approximately 60 km/h (37 mph). It also takes over when the battery’s charge falls below a set level or when the driver asks for stronger acceleration.
  • Parallel hybrid: above 60 km/h and in steady driving, the clutch connects the engine to the wheels through a single fixed gear ratio, and the traction motor can add support. According to the manufacturer, this direct mechanical drive is more efficient at those speeds.

Under braking, the traction motor feeds recovered energy back into the battery. The conventional brakes come in when more stopping force is needed. The driver does not have to manage any of the changes between modes.

“Operating fully automatically, the system selects the most efficient drive mode according to the current conditions. The traction battery is recharged while driving by the combustion engine or through energy recuperation.” — Johannes Neft, Škoda Auto Chief Development Officer

Two power outputs

There are two versions. The 100 kW model uses a 96 kW version of the 1.5 TSI petrol engine. The 125 kW model uses a 110 kW version of the same engine. Both versions have the same electric motors, and top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h (112 mph) in each case.

The battery holds 1.6 kWh gross. The system automatically keeps its charge between 40% and 90%. The battery sits under the rear seats, and the fuel tank holds 40 litres.

Practicality largely intact

The hatchback offers 460 litres of luggage space, rising to 1,400 litres with the rear seats folded. The estate offers 485 litres and up to 1,540 litres.

Compared with the petrol-only Octavias, the hybrid also comes as standard with a 13-inch infotainment screen, a 10-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument display and a HYBRID badge on the tailgate.

What it means

The full hybrid gives Octavia buyers a middle option between conventional petrol power and fully electric driving. Self-charging hybrids have long been the speciality of Toyota, for example in the Corolla family. With this powertrain, the Octavia now competes with them directly, in both hatchback and estate form.
