Cupra has updated its Born electric hatchback with sharper styling, a revised interior and a significantly longer maximum range. The company quotes up to 624 km (388 miles) for the strongest version, alongside a new digital cockpit, physical steering-wheel buttons and one-pedal driving. Four versions are offered, with Danish prices opening at DKK 249,990 for a 190 hp entry model. The range-topping Born VZ moves to 326 hp.

Cupra’s first bespoke electric model has been given a mid-life update rather than a replacement. The Born keeps its compact hatchback shape and rear-drive electric layout, but the manufacturer says design, technology and range have all been revised — and the range figures are the headline change.

Longer range across the line-up

According to Cupra, the updated Born offers up to 624 km (388 miles) in its most efficient configuration. Across the model range the company quotes 478–624 km (297–388 miles) and energy consumption of 14.3–14.6 kWh/100 km, depending on the version.

The entry car is rated at up to 481 km (299 miles), the mid-range Born Endurance at up to 619 km (385 miles), and the sportiest Born VZ at up to 624 km (388 miles). Cupra does not state whether these are WLTP figures, and battery capacity is not quoted in the material.

Charging times

Cupra lists a full AC charge from 0–100 per cent at between 6 hours 30 minutes and 8 hours 30 minutes, again depending on the version. On DC, a 10–80 per cent top-up is quoted at 26–29 minutes. Peak charging power is not given.

Cabin and controls

Inside, the Born gets an updated cabin and a new digital instrument cluster. Notably, Cupra has fitted physical buttons on the steering wheel — a move away from the touch-sensitive controls that have drawn criticism across the Volkswagen Group’s electric models. One-pedal driving, which lets the car slow to a stop on lift-off regeneration, is also part of the update. Externally, the company describes the new look as younger and more sporting.

Four versions, one Danish price ladder

The material covers the Danish market, where the Born starts at DKK 249,990 for a 190 hp version with what Cupra calls a generous standard specification. The Born Endurance sits under DKK 300,000 with a higher equipment level, while the Born VZ tops the range with 326 hp and the full Cupra sports package. Cupra says four versions are offered in total, though only three are named.

Private leasing in Denmark starts at DKK 2,795 per month with a DKK 29,995 first payment and 40,000 km included over the term, arranged through Volkswagen Semler Finans Danmark. The Danish semi-annual CO2 ownership tax is quoted at DKK 460.

Warranty

Battery-electric Cupra models delivered by an authorised Danish dealer after 19 December 2024 carry a combined five-year/150,000 km warranty against material and manufacturing faults — the first two years from the factory, the following three from Cupra Denmark. The company notes the cover excludes plug-in hybrids, digital services, optional equipment, wear items, paint, the high-voltage battery and roadside assistance.

What it means

A quoted maximum of 624 km puts the updated Born at the upper end of the compact electric hatchback class, where rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.3, Renault Mégane E-Tech and MG4 compete. Just as significant for everyday owners is the return of physical steering-wheel controls, a change buyers have been asking the Volkswagen Group for since the Born and ID.3 first arrived.
