BMW Motorrad has revealed the M 1000 RS, a hyper naked motorcycle that uses the full 218 hp superbike engine from the M 1000 RR. It weighs 196 kg (432 lb) unladen to DIN standard, and the company calls it the world’s most powerful bike in its segment. Only 1,000 will be built, and sales begin in March 2027.
BMW Motorrad has moved its top superbike hardware into the naked bike class. The new M 1000 RS takes the engine from the M 1000 RR and keeps its full 218 hp output. BMW therefore calls the bike the most powerful hyper naked model in the world. It is also a strictly limited run.
Superbike power without the fairing
The M 1000 RR’s engine is the core of the bike. BMW pairs its 218 hp with a DIN unladen weight of 196 kg (432 lb), which the company says gives an exceptional power-to-weight ratio. The aim, according to BMW, is to combine the agility and upright riding position of a naked bike with the technical rigour of a superbike.
The release gives no torque, kW, acceleration or top-speed figures.
Built on the M 1000 R
The technical starting point is the BMW M 1000 R with the M Competition Package. From there, BMW has made a series of changes:
- Riding position: the M rider footrest system from the M 1000 RR and a seat raised by 20 mm move the rider’s weight further forward than on the M 1000 R.
- Exhaust: a full titanium M exhaust system, chosen to save weight.
- Aerodynamics: matt carbon M winglets with RS lettering, which BMW says do real aerodynamic work as well as giving a racing look.
- Rear end: taken from the M 1000 RR superbike.
- Finish: matt carbon parts, a brushed aluminium fuel tank, new graphics and an M seat in an Alcantara look with RS embroidery, all part of a deliberately dark styling theme.
A name with racing history
At BMW Motorrad, RS stands for Rennsport, German for motor racing. The badge goes back to the BMW RS 255 Kompressor, raced from 1935 to 1939, and to the later BMW RS 54. BMW presents the new bike as the modern successor to that line.
Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW Motorrad, said:
“The BMW M 1000 RS makes a clear statement. RS stands for Rennsport – and that is exactly what you feel in every detail. With 218 hp, maximum precision and a character all its own, it is the world’s most powerful hyper naked bike. And because true exclusivity needs limits, we are building exactly 1,000 units. More performance. More character. It simply does not get more M than this.”
What it means
Rival makers have been pushing naked bikes towards superbike outputs for years. Putting the full M 1000 RR engine into an unfaired bike is BMW’s most direct entry into that race so far. With only 1,000 bikes and a price well above the standard M 1000 R, the RS is clearly aimed at collectors and committed enthusiasts rather than ordinary buyers.
