The all-electric Volkswagen ID. Polo has taken first place in the Budget category of the German Car of the Year 2026 awards, beating seven rivals including the Renault Twingo and Renault Clio. The jury of 47 gave the small EV top marks in four of the five scoring categories. Volkswagen says prices start at 24,995 euros in Germany.
Volkswagen’s electric reinterpretation of its long-running small car has picked up one of Germany’s most closely watched awards. The ID. Polo finished first in the Budget category at the German Car of the Year (GCOTY) 2026 awards, ahead of a seven-car field that included the Renault Twingo in second place and the Renault Clio in third.
Top marks in four of five categories
The GCOTY jury scores each car across five areas. The ID. Polo led the class in four of them, reaching 85.8 per cent of the maximum rating in both Design and Driving Pleasure. It scored 84.2 per cent for Safety and Environment, 83.8 per cent for Significance and Innovation, and 82.0 per cent for Comfort and Practicality.
The car also featured in the cross-category design awards decided by the 47 GCOTY jurors, taking second place overall for the “Special Award Best Interior Design” and third for “Best Exterior Design”.

A familiar name in a new form
Developed in Wolfsburg, the ID. Polo carries one of the company’s best-known model names into its electric line-up; Volkswagen states that more than 20 million Polos have been sold to date. The car uses front-wheel drive, and according to the manufacturer it combines a timeless design with generous interior space and features drawn from higher segments.

What it means
The Budget category is where Europe’s electric transition is currently being fought hardest, and the podium reflects that: two Renaults directly behind the Volkswagen. With a German starting price of 24,995 euros, the ID. Polo is positioned as one of the more affordable ways into a new battery-electric car from a mainstream European brand, in a segment where combustion-engined small cars have traditionally set the price expectations.
