Renault’s Twingo E-Tech electric is one of seven finalists for the Car of the Year 2027 award. It is the sixth year in a row that Renault has had a car in the final. The electric city car costs under €20,000 and has sold nearly 26,000 units so far. The winner will be named on 8 January 2027 at the Brussels Motor Show.
The Renault Twingo E-Tech electric is now one of seven cars competing for the Car of the Year 2027 title. A jury of 65 journalists from 25 countries tested and assessed 43 new models before choosing the seven finalists. The result will be announced on 8 January 2027 at a ceremony during the Brussels Motor Show in Belgium.
Six finals in a row for Renault
The nomination continues a strong run for Renault, which has had a finalist every year since 2022. In that time the brand has won the award twice: with the Scenic E-Tech electric in 2024, and with the Renault 5 E-Tech electric in 2025, a title it shared with the Alpine A290. Renault says the run reflects how much it has renewed its range in recent years.
Brand CEO Fabrice Cambolive presents the Twingo as proof that a European-built electric car can be both appealing and affordable.
“With Twingo, we rose to a challenge that many considered impossible: to develop an attractive, technologically advanced, affordable European electric car for under €20,000.”
He added: “This shows that we can make electric mobility affordable without sacrificing everything we love about cars: design, ingenuity, driving pleasure and emotion.”
Early sales success
The Twingo is already selling well. According to Renault, it has sold nearly 26,000 units since launch. It topped the European sales rankings for its segment in the third quarter and holds a share of about 25% of that segment across Europe. The company wants the car to bring electric motoring into the mainstream of the European A-segment, the class of the smallest city cars.
A small car with a flexible cabin
The Twingo is just 3.79 metres (12.4 ft) long, but Renault says it has the interior space of a larger car. It has five doors and two separate rear seats that slide 17 cm (6.7 in). The front passenger seat also folds flat. Boot space is up to 360 litres, and the maximum load length is up to 2 metres (6.6 ft).
Every version has a twin-screen display and a connected multimedia system. Techno trim adds OpenR Link with Google built-in, which Renault says is a first in the A-segment. It includes an EV route planner and Gemini, Google’s AI-powered voice assistant. The car offers up to 24 driver aids, plus a One Pedal function for town driving. A recent addition to the range is the Twingobay, a panoramic glass roof with an area of 0.7 m².
Powertrain, range and charging
A 60 kW (82 hp) electric motor drives the Twingo. Power comes from an LFP battery with 27.5 kWh of usable capacity, which gives a WLTP range of up to 263 km (163 miles). The standard charger is 6.6 kW. An optional Advanced Charge Pack adds 11 kW AC charging, 50 kW DC fast charging, and bidirectional V2L and V2G functions. The car is built at Renault’s Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia.
Strong competition
The Twingo faces six rivals in the final: the BMW iX3, Cupra Raval, Hyundai Ioniq 3, Kia EV2, Volkswagen ID.Polo and Volvo EX60. Every finalist this year is electric, and several are small, more affordable cars like the Twingo. That suggests the jury is paying close attention to the push for cheaper EVs in Europe.
