Former world rally champions Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya are back together in a rally car. According to Ford, the Spanish pair drove a Ford Puma Rally1 to victory at the Rally de Asturias Histórico in Spain, to the delight of the local crowd.
A familiar partnership back in action
Ford España says Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya celebrated their rally history at the Rally de Asturias Histórico by taking a win in a Ford Puma Rally1. The company describes the outing as a crowd-pleaser for the motorsport fans who turned out to watch the event in northern Spain.
Sainz and Moya are one of the best-known driver and co-driver pairings in rallying. They won the World Rally Championship together in the early 1990s, and both remain well-known figures in Spanish motorsport. Sainz later went on to multiple Dakar Rally victories.
The car they drove
The Puma Rally1 is the car M-Sport Ford has used in the top class of the World Rally Championship since the hybrid Rally1 regulations arrived in 2022. Seeing it at a historic rally is unusual: events of this kind are normally built around older machinery, which helps explain the attention the pair’s appearance received.
Ford’s announcement gives no further details of the event, such as stage times, the winning margin or the rest of the field.
What it means
For Ford, putting two of Spain’s most famous rally names in its current top-class car is a strong link between the brand’s rallying past and its present WRC programme. For fans, it was a chance to see a celebrated partnership compete together again.
