A second battery for the ID. Cross
The ID. Cross had its world premiere in mid-July and joined Volkswagen’s range with a 52 kWh battery. A smaller 37 kWh (net) pack now joins it. According to Volkswagen, the new version mainly targets buyers who drive in urban traffic and on typical commuting routes and who care most about a low entry price.
The company says the smaller battery brings lower purchase and running costs. It is offered in all three equipment lines (Trend, Life and Style), and buyers can choose between two power outputs.
Two outputs, one top speed
The 37 kWh battery comes with either 85 kW (116 PS) or 99 kW (135 PS). Top speed is 160 km/h (99 mph). Volkswagen points out that this is enough for motorway use, even though the car is pitched mainly at shorter daily trips.
Official combined energy consumption is 14.7–13.8 kWh/100 km for the ID. Cross Trend with 85 kW and 16.9–14.6 kWh/100 km for the 99 kW version.
Range and charging
Volkswagen quotes a WLTP range of up to 324 km (201 miles) for the ID. Cross Trend with 37 kWh, measured in the most range-favourable equipment variant. The manufacturer notes that real-world range depends on driving style, speed, temperature, load and topography.
DC fast charging at up to 90 kW is standard. The company says a charge from 10 to 80 per cent takes around 23 minutes, depending on the charging infrastructure, the battery’s state of charge and the outside temperature.
Equipment carries over
Volkswagen says the basic ID. Cross concept stays the same whichever battery is fitted. Even the entry-level Trend comes with Park Distance Control front and rear and smartphone integration via App Connect. The Life and Style lines add more comfort and technology features.
Depending on the equipment line, buyers can also specify Connected Travel Assist, which uses networked data for predictive assisted driving. Other options include a Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic sunroof and electrically adjustable 12-way seats with a massage function.
What it means
A smaller battery is a common way for carmakers to bring down the entry price of an electric model. Volkswagen is doing the same with the ID. Cross. The trade-off is range: the 37 kWh version is clearly meant for buyers whose daily driving rarely needs a large battery, and it keeps the standard 90 kW DC charging for occasional longer trips.
