Volkswagen has revealed the Mission Efficiency, a near-production concept that the company says is the world’s most efficient electric car. The prototype claims a drag coefficient of 0.158 and covered 1,278.36 km from Wolfsburg to Vienna on a single charge stop. Crucially, it runs the same MEB+ front-wheel-drive hardware as the upcoming ID. Polo and ID. Cross rather than bespoke racing technology.
Volkswagen has unveiled the Mission Efficiency, a concept car built to show how far aerodynamics and lightweight engineering can stretch the range of a mass-market electric drivetrain. The vehicle is not for sale, but its underpinnings are: the 99 kW (135 PS) motor and the high-voltage battery both come from the ID. Polo, and the car sits on the MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive.
Three records in one car
According to Volkswagen, the Mission Efficiency has set three records certified by the Record Institute Germany (RID) in the category “near-production four-seater electric vehicle suitable for everyday use”.
The first is a drag coefficient of 0.158, which the company describes as a new benchmark for road-approved cars. The second came on a so-called ideal drive at a constant 68 km/h (42 mph), with no gradients and climate control switched off, returning 6.48 kWh/100 km. The third is a class record for the most economical near-production electric car.
Wolfsburg to Vienna on one charge stop
The headline demonstration was a documented consumption run of 1,278.36 km (794 miles) from Volkswagen’s German Development Centre in Wolfsburg via Poznań in Poland and Olomouc in the Czech Republic to Vienna. Average speed was 67.72 km/h (42 mph) and the top speed reached 138 km/h (86 mph).
Over that distance the car used 7.51 kWh/100 km including charging losses, or 6.89 kWh/100 km without them. The 54.9 kWh net battery was charged only once en route, and 164.0 km (102 miles) of range remained on arrival. Volkswagen notes that the usable energy was raised from 52.0 to 54.9 kWh by software for the record attempt — a change it says would not be applied to a production car, where battery longevity takes priority.
“Rather than using specialist technology, the vehicle set its three world records using affordable production technology from the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, based on the MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand and Head of the Brand Group Core.
Shaped entirely by the air
The body is a flow-optimised teardrop with a frontal area of just 2.08 m². Active cooling air flaps, clad rear wheels and a fully clad underbody complete the package, while frameless door windows and door handles recessed into the outer skin remove further disturbances.
The payoff grows with speed. Above 80 km/h (50 mph), Volkswagen says consumption is more than 30 per cent lower than a standard ID. Polo, and at 140 km/h (87 mph) the Mission Efficiency uses roughly as much energy as an ID. Polo at 100 km/h (62 mph).
Wheels account for 25 to 30 per cent of aerodynamic drag, so the front wheel arches were drawn tightly around the tyre radius to cut turbulence, and newly patented rim deflectors on the inside of every wheel stop air entering the rims. Flat, flow-optimised hubcaps handle the outer face. Tyres were developed with Continental from the EcoContact 7, with rolling resistance of 4.9 kg per tonne — around 25 per cent below the threshold for the EU’s top tyre label class A.
Solar roof and a stripped interior
A 370 W photovoltaic system is built into the glass roof and boot lid to feed the on-board electrical system. Depending on season, region and weather, Volkswagen says it can add up to 30 km (19 miles) of real range per day.
Inside, weight was cut by lightweight panelling, a portable Bluetooth speaker in place of a fitted audio system, and a “bring your own device” approach in which a smartphone or tablet replaces the infotainment screen.
The coupé measures 4,775 mm long and 1,392 mm tall, with 2+2 seating and a 481-litre boot. The rear seats are intended for occupants up to roughly 1.60 m tall. The structure mixes ID. Polo components with a self-supporting aluminium frame plus carbon fibre-reinforced polymer and aramid composite parts.
New brake hardware at the rear
The front axle is the MacPherson setup and hydraulic brake from the ID. Polo. At the rear, Volkswagen has fitted an electromechanical brake for the first time, developed with tech supplier AUMOVIO, which also supplies the ID. Polo brake system. The company says it reduces friction losses, removes lines and brake fluid, allows variable brake force distribution, improves recuperation and aids cornering stability.
The prototype holds EU road approval and meets the relevant safety, strength and crash requirements.
What it means
Chief Designer Andreas Mindt draws a line back to the XL1, the plug-in hybrid shown in 2013 that was then the world’s most economical production car. The difference this time is the parts list: where the XL1 was an exercise in exotic construction, the Mission Efficiency leans on hardware destined for Volkswagen’s cheapest electric models.
That matters because aerodynamic drag, not battery size, dominates energy use at motorway speeds — the area where affordable EVs with small packs lose the most range. Volkswagen is signalling how much range it thinks it can find in the ID. Polo and ID. Cross generation without adding cells or cost.
