Renault has used the 2026 IAA Transportation show in Hanover to introduce the new Trafic Van E-Tech electric, the first of five light commercial vehicles the brand plans to launch by 2028. Built in France on a new 800-volt platform, the medium van claims more than 470 km (292 miles) of range and 20-minute fast charging worth up to 280 km (174 miles). It is also the first Renault Group model to use a software-defined architecture, with two computers replacing 80 control units.

Renault is presenting the next step of its light commercial vehicle strategy at the 2026 IAA Transportation show in Hanover. The new Trafic Van E-Tech electric opens a product offensive that, under the company’s futuREady plan, is set to bring five new LCVs by 2028. According to Renault, the brand is currently the second-largest LCV seller in Europe and has outperformed the market for four quarters in a row, with Master leading the large-van segment and Kangoo and Trafic both on the podium in their classes.

The Trafic nameplate dates back to 1980 and has passed 2.8 million units sold. The new generation is designed and built at the Sandouville plant in France. A panel van arrives first, before the end of this year, with chassis-cab and crew-cab versions following in 2027.

Range and charging

Renault quotes more than 470 km of range, with WLTP homologation still pending. In urban use, where regenerative braking does more work, the company says range can reach nearly 690 km (429 miles) — enough, it claims, for up to five working days without plugging in. The figure comes from an 81 kWh battery, which is modest by the standards of long-range vans and points to a focus on efficiency rather than sheer battery size.

The van is the first to use Renault Group’s new RGEV medium-van platform, with an 800-volt electrical architecture. Renault describes the resulting charging performance as the best in the European LCV segment: 20 minutes on a fast charger adds up to 280 km of range, or up to 380 km (236 miles) in city driving. Total cost of ownership is said to be up to 10% lower than an equivalent combustion-engined Trafic.

Software-defined van

The bigger technical story is the electrical architecture. The Trafic Van E-Tech electric is the first Renault Group vehicle, and the first LCV in Europe, to use a software-defined structure in which 80 electronic control units are replaced by two central computers. They run CAR OS, an Android-based operating system developed with Google.

Renault says the set-up allows over-the-air updates through the vehicle’s life, predictive maintenance and, by extension, stronger residual values. Body converters get a tool called Convertor Companion, which lets conversion-specific controls run as apps inside the openR link infotainment system rather than requiring a second screen.

Still a working van

The commercial basics are unchanged: up to 5.8 m³ of load volume, a 1.3-tonne payload, 2-tonne towing capacity, room for three Euro pallets, a 53 cm load height and 1.30 metres between the wheel arches. At 1.89 metres tall it clears standard underground car parks, and the 10.3-metre turning circle is, Renault says, on a par with a Clio. A multi-link rear axle is fitted.

Vehicle-to-Load is standard, allowing tools to be run from a socket in the load bay. An electric power take-off is promised later, rated at up to 3.6 kWh and 10 kWh depending on the application, for refrigeration units or ambulance equipment.

Emissions and services

Renault puts the van’s lifecycle carbon footprint at 33 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent over 200,000 km (124,000 miles), against roughly 63 tonnes for a comparable diesel — a cut of more than 45%. The calculation uses the average European electricity mix and a WLTP range increased by 20% to reflect real-world use. Aerodynamic drag is 6% better than before and powertrain efficiency exceeds 90%, according to the company.

Conversions are offered on three levels: work carried out in Renault’s French plants at Maubeuge, Sandouville and Batilly; the group-owned specialist Qstomize; and a network of 300 certified body converters audited every three years. From 2027, a fleet programme called Renault UPTIMIZE will use connected-vehicle data and AI for predictive maintenance, priority service through 400 Renault Pro+ centres and an in-vehicle app that applies a fleet manager’s energy, speed and safety settings automatically. Renault’s stated aim is to halve downtime after an incident.

What it means

The medium-van class is the most contested part of Europe’s electric LCV market, and range has been its weak point. If the 470 km figure survives homologation, the Trafic would sit near the top of the segment while carrying a smaller battery than several rivals — the efficiency argument Renault is leaning on. The software architecture, meanwhile, arrives in a commercial vehicle before it reaches the brand’s passenger cars.

The panel van goes on sale before the end of 2026, with chassis-cab and crew-cab versions and the UPTIMIZE programme following in 2027. Prices have not been announced.
