The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon and Estate with combustion and plug-in hybrid power have been comprehensively updated, with a new face, a fourth-generation MBUX system built on MB.OS and plug-in hybrids that the company says cover up to 100 km (62 miles) on electricity alone. Rear-axle steering is now available in the segment’s best-selling model family, cutting the turning circle to 10.64 m. Order books open on 18 August 2026, with German prices starting at 41,045 euros excluding VAT for the C 200 Saloon. The update follows shortly after the European launch of the all-electric C-Class.
Mercedes-Benz has revised the combustion-engined and plug-in hybrid versions of its C-Class Saloon and Estate, and describes the package as the most comprehensive technical upgrade in the model line’s history. It arrives shortly after the electric C-Class reached European showrooms, giving the range two clearly separate technical paths.
The C-Class has been on sale since 1982 and has passed twelve million units, according to the manufacturer, which makes it the brand’s best-selling model family. This update is therefore an evolution rather than a reinvention: the familiar athletic proportions stay, while the technology inside moves several generations forward.
A sharper face with an illuminated grille
The front end is dominated by a new, more vertically oriented radiator grille framed in chrome, with hot-stamped stars forming the Mercedes-Benz pattern and an LED light guide tracing the frame. Depending on the market, the central star can also be illuminated. A gloss-black panel visually links the grille to the new headlamps, which use a twin-star daytime running light signature; on the Saloon, the tail lamps pick up a star motif as well.
New bumpers add volume and sharper edges, and a light projector integrated into the sill panels is a first for the C-Class, casting an animated Mercedes-Benz pattern onto the ground as the doors open. Wheels run from 17 to 19 inches, including a newly developed 18-inch design and two new 19-inch AMG wheels. Two paints join the palette, Lavender Silver metallic and Moody Sky Grey metallic, and an AMG Line Plus trim is offered on the C-Class for the first time, bundling the Night package, gloss-black exhaust trim and spoiler lip, sports seats with red stitching and red seat belts.
Electrified engines and up to 100 km on electricity
All engines have been developed further with efficiency, performance and regulatory headroom in mind, and Mercedes-Benz says they are prepared for the coming Euro 7 rules. Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants remain, with the plug-in hybrids quoted at up to 100 km (62 miles) of electric range on the WLTP cycle – enough to cover most daily commutes without starting the engine. The chassis has been retuned for greater agility while keeping long-distance comfort, according to the company.
Rear-axle steering is the notable mechanical addition. With up to 2.5 degrees of steering angle, it shrinks the turning circle by 43 cm to 10.64 m, and Mercedes-Benz says it also improves stability during quick lane changes and evasive manoeuvres.
MB.OS, MBUX and a multi-agent assistant
The cabin keeps a 31.2 cm (12.3-inch) instrument cluster and a portrait 30.2 cm (11.9-inch) media display, but the software underneath is new. The Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) controls the vehicle’s domains and enables over-the-air updates for numerous functions, which the company presents as a way to keep the car current after purchase.
On top of that sits the fourth generation of MBUX and its AI-based Virtual Assistant, which combines ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini in what Mercedes-Benz calls a multi-agent approach. It responds to “Hey Mercedes”, holds multi-part conversations, has a short-term memory and appears as one of three selectable avatars. Navigation is based on Google Maps and works alongside MBUX Surround Navigation, while the Automotive AI Agent from Google Cloud handles questions about destinations, points of interest and parking availability. The assistant can also find and start music or podcasts from the context of a conversation.
The new multifunction steering wheel retains the physical rocker switches for the limiter and DISTRONIC plus a roller for volume, with flush capacitive control panels that give haptic feedback.
Driving assistance and comfort
Driver assistance runs under the MB.DRIVE banner. MB.DRIVE ASSIST PLUS can change lanes automatically on the motorway and brake for red lights and stop signs, while MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST handles moving into and out of parking spaces. Optional multicontour seats add massage functions, inflatable side bolsters and a four-way lumbar support, and a further developed Burmester 3D surround sound system, two new interior colours and three new trim elements round off the update.
What it means
The C-Class competes directly with the BMW 3 Series and Audi A5, and this update leans on software and comfort rather than headline performance. Mercedes-Benz has not published power, torque, acceleration or consumption figures for the updated engines in this release, so the direct technical comparison with rivals will have to wait.
“The new C-Class proves that continuity and innovation are not a contradiction. With its sporty elegance, electrified drivetrains and intelligent support from MB.OS, it offers what drivers really need: reliability that has proven itself, and innovative technology that creates real added value in everyday life. A familiar classic becomes a modern companion.”
