Volkswagen has revealed the Tiguan EDITION 20, an anniversary special that celebrates two decades of its compact SUV. Available to order now from 48,180 euros, it pairs R-Line styling with a bespoke Maple Red metallic paint and a raft of exclusive details. The company says more than nine million Tiguans have been sold worldwide since the model launched in 2007.
Volkswagen has introduced the Tiguan EDITION 20, a special model built to mark 20 years of its best-selling SUV. The anniversary version can be ordered from today, with prices starting at 48,180 euros for the 1.5 TSI with 110 kW (150 PS). According to Volkswagen, the Tiguan has shaped the compact SUV segment since its 2007 debut and has been central to the brand’s commercial success.
What sets the EDITION 20 apart
The special edition is based on the Life equipment line and adds R-Line exterior elements alongside its anniversary-specific touches. The clearest signal is the new Maple Red metallic paint, developed specifically for this model. Volkswagen lists an extensive set of exclusive features, including front bumper trim strips in the body colour, high-gloss black window trims and mirror caps, darkened rear side windows, and lasered EDITION 20 lettering on the B-pillar. Door logo projectors display an EDITION 20 badge, while 19-inch Coventry alloy wheels with a coloured finish are fitted as standard; 20-inch wheels are available as an option.
Inside, red decorative stitching runs across the dashboard, door trim, seat covers and mats. There are illuminated sill panels with EDITION 20 lettering, a steering wheel with special-colour trim and matching badging, and reworked front and rear seat covers with a new centre section. Volkswagen says all engines offered for the Tiguan Life from 110 kW (150 PS) upwards can be specified for the anniversary model.
A bestseller two decades in the making
The Tiguan story began on a show stand rather than the road. Volkswagen presented the Concept Tiguan at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2006, and a strong reception led to a swift decision to put it into production. The first-generation car appeared at the Frankfurt motor show in 2007 and reached the market the same year. Its name, chosen through a reader poll by Auto Bild magazine, blends ‘Tiger’ and the German word for iguana, ‘Leguan’.
The first generation offered a flexible cabin, optional 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a broad engine range, arriving just as demand for compact SUVs was climbing. The second generation, from 2016, grew larger and added more space, comfort and driver assistance technology. In 2017 the Tiguan became the Volkswagen Group’s top-selling model, a position it has held ever since. A longer Allspace version broadened the line-up, and in 2020 the Tiguan R arrived with 235 kW (320 PS) and all-wheel drive. Annual production rose from 120,000 cars in 2007 to almost 911,000 in 2019.
What it means for buyers
The current, third-generation Tiguan launched in 2024 with a new design, a large touchscreen-led cockpit and options drawn from more expensive segments. Its powertrain range spans TDI and TSI engines, mild-hybrid eTSI units with 48-volt technology and eHybrid plug-in hybrids that Volkswagen says offer electric ranges of over 100 kilometres. Top engines come with 4MOTION as standard and a towing capacity of up to 2,300 kg. Volkswagen also confirms it is again developing a powerful R variant.
For buyers, the EDITION 20 is essentially a well-equipped Life trim with distinctive styling and a colour that will not be part of the standard range, positioned as a value-focused anniversary package rather than a new performance flagship.
“The Tiguan has been a key factor in the Volkswagen brand’s success for the past 20 years,” said Martin Sander, Member of the Volkswagen Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing and After Sales. “With more than nine million vehicles sold worldwide and its status as the Volkswagen Group’s top-selling model, it exemplifies quality, versatility and practicality more than any other vehicle. The EDITION 20 is our way of saying thank-you to all those customers who have contributed to this success story.”
The Tiguan is currently built in Wolfsburg (Germany), Puebla (Mexico) and Anting (China) and is sold in more than 60 countries.
