Nissan has signed a multi-year deal to supply its GEN4 powertrain to Andretti Formula E from Season 13, linking two of the championship’s most experienced teams. The agreement puts four Nissan-powered cars on the grid and pairs the manufacturer with the 2023 title-winning squad. It was announced in Tokyo ahead of the Japanese capital’s first night E-Prix.

Nissan has announced a multi-year agreement to supply its Formula E GEN4 powertrain to Andretti Formula E from Season 13 onwards. The deal makes Andretti a customer team of the Japanese manufacturer for the championship’s next technical era and, according to Nissan, sets up a platform for close technical collaboration between the two organisations.

A customer deal between two front-runners

Andretti is one of Formula E’s longest-standing entrants and took the 2023 FIA Formula E Drivers’ World Championship with Jake Dennis. Nissan, which builds its own powertrain, says the tie-up will put four Nissan-powered cars on the grid, creating what it describes as valuable scope for technical exchange and continuous development across the works and customer operations.

The collaboration links two drivers’ world champions. Reigning title holder Oliver Rowland, who races for the Nissan Formula E Team, and Andretti’s Jake Dennis will both feed technical input into the partnership as it develops through the GEN4 years, the company says.

What GEN4 means for Nissan

Nissan frames Formula E as a central pillar of its wider electrification strategy and part of its Ambition 2030 targets. It became the first manufacturer to commit to the GEN4 era, which runs until 2030, and was the first and only Japanese marque to enter the all-electric series when it debuted in Season 5 (2018/19). The manufacturer took full ownership of its programme after acquiring the e.dams team in April 2022.

The current GEN3 era runs through the end of Season 12 (2025/26), so the Andretti supply deal marks the start of Nissan’s next chapter as a powertrain supplier rather than a works team alone.

Announced on a big weekend in Tokyo

The agreement was revealed in Tokyo during one of Nissan’s most significant weeks of the season, ahead of the city’s first night E-Prix. To mark the occasion, the Nissan Formula E Team will run a one-off NISMO-inspired livery for what is its final home race of the GEN3 era.

“We’re delighted to welcome Andretti Formula E as our customer team for the GEN4 era,” said Tommaso Volpe, managing director and team principal, Nissan Formula E Team. “Andretti is one of the most successful names in motorsport, including Formula E, where it has established itself as one of the leading teams.”

Jill Gregory, president of Andretti Global, said partnering with Nissan for GEN4 was “a significant step” that gives the team “a strong foundation to compete for race wins and championships.”

What it means

For the grid, the deal broadens Nissan’s footprint from a single works entry to four powered cars, which should help both sides gather data and refine the new package. For Andretti, it secures a proven powertrain partner for a cost-controlled era in which the choice of manufacturer is one of the biggest performance levers available.

The partnership begins with Season 13.
