Audi has named Thomas Fuhr as the new CEO of Audi Formula Racing GmbH, the company that develops and builds the power unit for its Formula 1 project. He takes up the role on 1 November. The appointment puts a new leader in charge of the engine side of Audi’s works F1 programme.
A new leader at the engine base
Thomas Fuhr will become CEO of Audi Formula Racing GmbH from 1 November, Audi announced in a media release dated 28 October 2026 from Neuburg an der Donau and Hinwil.
Audi Formula Racing is based in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany. According to the manufacturer, the company is responsible for developing and manufacturing the power unit used in Audi’s Formula 1 project. The role therefore covers the engine side of the programme, not the chassis and race operations.
Two sites, one project
The dual dateline reflects how the project is split between two locations. The power unit work takes place in Neuburg in Bavaria, while Hinwil in Switzerland is the long-standing base of the team operation that Audi took over to form its works entry.
Audi joined the Formula 1 grid as a full works team in 2026, the season new technical regulations came in. These place much more weight on electrical power and require sustainable fuels. Under these rules, an in-house power unit is a central part of any manufacturer’s competitiveness, which makes the leadership of the Neuburg operation a key position within the project.
What we don’t know yet
The short announcement gives no details about Thomas Fuhr’s background, his previous roles or who held the position before him. Audi also gave no reason for the change and did not say whether other management roles in the F1 project are affected.
