Mercedes-AMG has revealed its 14th Official FIA F1 Safety Car, the GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+, which makes its race debut this weekend at the Hungarian Grand Prix. It marks 30 years of Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG supplying the sport’s safety car and, according to the company, is the first to use fully variable all-wheel drive. The new car replaces the AMG GT Black Series that had served since 2022.
Mercedes-AMG will put a new Official FIA F1 Safety Car into service at this weekend’s Formula 1 AWS Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ is the 14th safety car the brand has supplied since 1996, a run the manufacturer says now spans 30 years. It takes over from the AMG GT Black Series, which had held the role since 2022 and, according to Mercedes-AMG, completed 51 deployments — most recently over the opening four laps of the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix.
More power and, for the first time, all-wheel drive
The GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 450 kW (612 hp) and 850 Nm of torque, driving through the AMG Speedshift MCT 9G nine-speed transmission. The headline change is under the skin: the manufacturer says this is the first Official FIA F1 Safety Car to use its fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, which it says improves traction in both dry and wet conditions. Standard AMG ceramic composite brakes and the AMG Active Ride Control roll-stabilisation system are also fitted.
Aerodynamics and race-track hardware
Mercedes-AMG says the road car’s aerodynamics were developed further for safety-car duty, with a new front splitter, additional dive planes at the nose and a modified rear wing with an active flap to add downforce and stability at high speed. The signalling system is built into the rear wing, joined by additional LED units front and rear: orange lights signal a no-overtaking order, while green lights release the field to pass. All the modules are dimmable. The car also carries FIA-specific radio, GPS and camera technology with a central control panel in the console.
For competition use, the GT 63 PRO gains a roll cage, six-point harnesses and RECARO racing bucket seats, plus an internal fuel tank and Makrolon glazing on the front and rear screens. It runs on Pirelli P Zero R tyres with a two-compound tread that the company says was developed with Mercedes-AMG at the Nürburgring and Nardò. The tank holds 75 litres of PETRONAS Primax Pro-Race M2 100-octane fuel, which Mercedes-AMG describes as 40 percent sustainable (10 percent ethanol, 30 percent eFuel).

Simon Wilbers, head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, said continuing the tradition with a car that “raises our own bar once again” was both an honour and a challenge.
Anniversary livery in Budapest
Two examples of the modified GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ will be on standby at the Hungaroring, both wearing a special 30-year livery: a black finish with red wrap elements, partner CrowdStrike branding and an anniversary logo on the bonnet, roof and rear wing.
