BWT Alpine Formula One Team is expanding its tie-up with post-quantum security firm SEALSQ, moving from data protection into actual computation. The team will trial hybrid quantum-classical simulation built by Paris-based ColibriTD, one of SEALSQ’s quantum portfolio companies. The stated aim is to squeeze more insight out of the strictly limited simulation resources Formula One teams are allowed, just as the 2026 technical rules reset the sport.
Formula One engineering runs into a hard wall that has nothing to do with physics: the regulations. Aerodynamic testing and computing resources are capped, so teams cannot simply buy their way to better simulations. BWT Alpine Formula One Team says it is now looking at quantum computing as one way to get more out of the budget it does have.
From securing data to crunching it
The team and SEALSQ (NASDAQ: LAES) announced a quantum-security partnership in November 2025, focused on protecting the team’s data against future quantum-era attacks. The expanded collaboration announced today keeps that post-quantum protection in place but adds a second strand: quantum-powered computation.
The technology comes from ColibriTD, a company in SEALSQ’s quantum investment portfolio. According to the partners, the plan is to introduce hybrid quantum-classical simulation capabilities and extract additional insight from the computing and testing resources the team already has. The companies describe the project as a world first — the structured application of quantum-accelerated simulation to fundamental physics problems, combined with advanced post-quantum data protection.
What ColibriTD brings
ColibriTD is a Paris-based deeptech company working on quantum computing for multiphysics simulation. Its core technologies are H-DES, a Hybrid Differential Equation Solver, and MPQP, a hardware-agnostic quantum workflow platform. The company says its solver improves the calculation efficiency and accuracy of equations relevant to CFD, thermal, structural and multiphysics problems — the same categories of maths that sit behind an F1 car’s aerodynamics and cooling.
ColibriTD came into the fold through SEALSQ’s Quantum Fund, a strategic investment initiative launched in 2025 to build what SEALSQ calls a Quantum Vertical Sovereign Stack, an end-to-end “Root-to-Qubit” ecosystem. ColibriTD was one of the fund’s earliest investments.

That last point matters: this is not a replacement for the team’s conventional high-performance computing, but something running next to it.
Still at proof-of-concept stage
The collaboration hit its first milestone in July 2026, when engineers and executives from Alpine, SEALSQ and ColibriTD met at the team’s Enstone base to set an initial roadmap and pick priority areas for evaluation. The goal at this stage is a proof of concept — no performance figures, timelines or track applications have been published.
SEALSQ CEO Carlos Moreira said the project is “a perfect application of the Quantum Vertical Sovereign Stack SEALSQ is building through our $200 million Quantum Fund”, adding that integrating portfolio companies such as ColibriTD is “turning quantum technologies into practical solutions that deliver real performance gains in the most demanding industrial environments”.
David Sanchez, Executive Technical Director at BWT Alpine Formula One Team, framed it more cautiously: “We are in constant pursuit of better understanding in every area and are always looking at how emerging technologies can help us extract insight from data and simulations to underpin engineering decisions. Working with SEALSQ and ColibriTD gives us an exciting opportunity to explore the potential of quantum within our existing environment.”
What it means
Formula One has long served as a shop window for computing partners, and quantum vendors are an obvious next entrant now that cost caps have made efficiency the currency of the sport. The timing is deliberate: 2026 brings a full technical reset for chassis and power units, which means every team is re-learning its car from scratch and simulation quality counts for more than usual.
The honest caveat is that near-term quantum hardware remains limited, something ColibriTD itself acknowledges. For now this is an evaluation project rather than a tool in the team’s daily loop.
No timetable has been given for when the proof of concept might be completed.
