BMW and MINI are rolling out new charging features across their electric line-up in time for the summer holidays. The updates focus on price transparency and cost control, letting drivers see live tariffs and running charging costs much as they would at a fuel pump. The company also says its charging network has grown to 3.1 million points worldwide.
BMW and MINI have expanded the charging features available to owners of their electric models, aiming to make long holiday journeys easier to plan and pay for. According to the manufacturer, the changes centre on giving drivers a clearer picture of what a public charging session will actually cost, along with a steadily growing charging network.
Seeing the price before you plug in
One of the long-standing frustrations of public charging is the lack of clear pricing at the point itself. Unlike a petrol or diesel forecourt, charging points rarely display reliable prices, and a single point may accept several tariffs whose cost depends on the provider chosen.
BMW says its answer is a feature in the My BMW App and the MINI App that lists nearby charging stations alongside their charging capacities, tariffs and resulting costs. The information is also shown inside the car on BMW models running Operating System 8.5 or later and on the latest MINI models. The apps display every tariff the customer has saved in their Charging Wallet, plus any ad-hoc rates offered locally, so drivers can pick the cheapest option available.
A running total while you charge
For its Neue Klasse models, BMW is adding a second feature that works during the charging session itself. The car’s display and the app show the price per kilowatt-hour and track how much energy has been added and at what total cost, in real time, until charging finishes — the company likens it to a fuel pump counting up litres and price. This function is available on BMW Neue Klasse vehicles running BMW Operating System X.
A larger charging network
The BMW Group says its charging network now comprises 3.1 million charging points worldwide, an increase of around 300,000 since December 2025. In Europe the total rose by 100,000 to 1.1 million points, while in Germany the figure grew by roughly ten per cent to 200,000. The company is also involved in building infrastructure directly, notably through the IONITY joint venture in Europe.
Customers on the Active tariff additionally gain access to the Preferred Partner Network, which offers discounted rates at selected premium providers. These discounts can vary by country but remain available to customers travelling elsewhere in Europe. BMW says 21 per cent of its European charging points currently belong to this network.
Planning a route around charging
When a destination is entered and the remaining range is insufficient, both BMW Maps and MINI Navigation calculate a route that builds in charging stops, timing them so the destination is reached as quickly as possible. Planning can be done from home via the app before setting off, and drivers can set a preferred minimum arrival charge level in five-per-cent increments or give priority to particular providers. Estimated stop durations and costs can be shown in advance, and the availability of a chosen point is checked more frequently as the car approaches it, so an alternative can be found if a station goes offline.
If the route includes a DC fast-charging stop, the high-voltage battery is preconditioned during the drive for the most efficient charging; this can also be triggered manually. BMW notes that preconditioning shortens charging times but is not a requirement for using a fast charger.
What it means
Charging cost and convenience remain among the biggest question marks for buyers weighing an electric car, and price transparency in particular has lagged behind the pump. Bringing tariff comparisons and a live cost readout into the car addresses a genuine pain point, though the most detailed of the new tools are tied to BMW’s newest Neue Klasse models and software.
The features are rolling out now, in time for the summer holiday season.
