Mercedes-AMG has opened orders for its updated performance SUVs, the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+. Both are now available from dealers and online, powered by a thoroughly reworked 4.0-litre V8 biturbo with mild-hybrid assistance. In Germany the GLE 63 S SUV starts at 170,045 euros including VAT, with the larger GLS 63 opening at 193,684 euros.

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed the sales start for two of its most powerful SUVs. The GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and the seven-seat GLS 63 4MATIC+ can now be ordered from sales partners and online, the company says, pairing the brand’s familiar V8 character with a range of updates to the engine, chassis and design.

A reworked V8 at the core

The centrepiece is the extensively updated M177 Evo engine, a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo. According to Mercedes-AMG, the unit gains a new flat-plane crankshaft that reduces rotating mass to sharpen response and free-revving character. The maker also lists an optimised injection system, redesigned intake and exhaust ports, a revised intake camshaft and changes to the compressor wheel and turbocharger housing. A particulate filter is now standard worldwide, which the company says brings the engine in line with current emissions standards.

Peak output stands at 450 kW (612 hp), matching the previous generation, while maximum torque of 850 Nm is available between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. A mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator (ISG 2.0) and a 48-volt electrical network adds a further 17 kW (23 hp) and 205 Nm on demand.

Performance figures

The GLE 63 S sprints from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 3.9 seconds, while the heavier GLS 63 records 4.2 seconds. Both are electronically limited to a top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph). A new AMG Performance exhaust with standard flap control varies the soundtrack from restrained in Comfort to more vocal in the Sport+ programme.

Chassis and handling

Both models come with the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension, combining air springs with adaptive damping. In Trail mode the body rises by 55 mm (2.2 in) for light off-road use, while Sport, Sport+ and Comfort above 120 km/h (75 mph) lower it by 10 mm for better aerodynamics and stability. AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilisation, an electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential and the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive are fitted as standard. Drivers can choose between six AMG DYNAMIC SELECT programmes: Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Slippery, Trail and Individual.

Design and cabin

The SUVs get a redesigned front with an AMG-specific grille, larger air intakes and an exclusive LED light signature, plus twin exhaust tips and a diffuser element at the rear. Wheels run up to 22 inches on the GLE 63 S and up to 23 inches on the GLS 63. Inside, the latest AMG Performance steering wheel is joined by a choice of Nappa leathers, with MANUFAKTUR options extending the paint, leather and trim selections.

What it means

The update keeps the combustion-engined AMG SUVs on sale alongside the brand’s growing electric line-up, and squares them up against rivals such as the BMW X5 M and Porsche Cayenne Turbo. With outputs unchanged but efficiency and emissions addressed, Mercedes-AMG is positioning these as long-term additions to the range.
