With 40 years of success behind it, the seventh generation of the BMW M5 is ready to hit the roads in Denmark. For the first time, this model features an electrified powertrain.
The combination of a V8 gasoline engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor delivers a total output of 727 horsepower. Paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds.
The new BMW M5 continues the tradition of a high-performance luxury sedan that embodies both dynamism and elegance, offering a unique blend of sportiness and comfort.
The M Hybrid powertrain consists of a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline engine and an electric motor, both specifically tailored for the upcoming BMW M5. The gasoline engine produces a maximum output of 585 hp (430 kW) with a peak torque of 750 Nm, while the electric motor generates up to 197 hp (145 kW) and a nominal torque of 280 Nm.
By combining these two engines, the M Hybrid system delivers a total output of 727 hp (535 kW) and a torque of 1,000 Nm. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but it can be raised to 305 km/h if the optional M Driver’s Package is selected. In fully electric mode, the new BMW M5 can achieve speeds of up to 140 km/h.
The combined power from the combustion engine and electric motor is transmitted to the road via the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which can be set up for pure rear-wheel drive, providing a more focused racing experience. The active M differential on the rear axle is specifically designed to enhance the characteristics of the M Hybrid powertrain.
The high-voltage battery, located in the car’s underbody, offers 18.6 kWh of usable energy, enabling an electric range of up to 68 kilometers. AC charging is possible at up to 7.4 kW.
The overall concept of the model makes it suitable for daily driving, long-distance travel, and track performance.
Key factors, in addition to the powertrain, include a long wheelbase, wide track width, low center of gravity, and a balanced 50:50 weight distribution, along with an optimized chassis for enhanced stiffness and improved aerodynamics, as well as suspension technology configured specifically for this model.
The prominent and wide wheel arches, sculptural front end, and model-specific marking on the C-pillar, including an embossed “M5” at the Hofmeister kink, create an athletic profile that clearly differentiates it from the standard BMW 5 Series Sedan.
M-specific design features ensure that the new BMW M5 is instantly recognizable as a high-performance sports car. It boasts a sleek and sporty silhouette, accentuated by redesigned wheel arches specifically for the BMW M5. This design has resulted in an increase in the car’s width—75 mm at the front wheels and 48 mm at the rear compared to the standard BMW 5 Series Sedan. The pronounced wheel arches also define the character of the rear end, highlighting the width and muscular stance of the new BMW M5.
