BMW is rolling out a wider set of active safety assistance systems as standard equipment across several model lines with its Neue Klasse generation. The headline feature is an exit warning that can physically delay the door opening if a cyclist or vehicle is approaching, aimed at the accident type known as dooring. The BMW iX3 is the first production model with the technology, and the i3, X5 and 7 Series will follow.

BMW says the arrival of its Neue Klasse generation marks the first time the company will fit an expanded portfolio of active safety assistance systems as standard across multiple model series. Rather than reserving the functions for option packages, the carmaker is bundling them into the base specification of the cars that use the new electronic architecture.

The BMW iX3 was the first Neue Klasse production model to carry the technologies. According to the manufacturer, the BMW i3, BMW X5 and BMW 7 Series are set to follow.

A door that waits until the road is clear

Dooring accidents happen when the door of a parked car is opened into moving traffic, and cyclists are the most exposed group. BMW cites the German Insurance Association (GDV), which recorded 392 dooring accidents in Berlin alone during 2024 — just under 8 percent of all bicycle accidents in the city.

An exit warning that flags the hazard with audible and visual signals has been standard on many BMW models for years. With the Neue Klasse, the company adds an active door opening delay to that system as standard. Side radars monitor the area around the parked car and look for approaching vehicles, bicycles and other road users; if the system judges there is a collision risk, the electronic door lock holds the door shut until the hazard has passed.

Symbiotic Drive: intervening only when it has to

The underlying approach BMW calls Symbiotic Drive is built around reading driver intent. The company says the system interprets steering inputs and the driver’s line of sight so assistance functions step in only when needed. In practice that means the Lane Keeping Assistant issues a warning or a steering correction when it detects an unintended lane departure or an imminent collision, but stays out of the way when the driver clearly means to change course — signalled by the indicator, an active steering input or a shoulder check — as long as no collision or run-off-road risk is foreseeable.

BMW backs the case with fleet data from 1.3 million vehicles running the previous generation of driver-assistance technology, whose owners consented to data collection. In one month, that European fleet covered 1.6 billion km (994 million miles). Drivers were alerted to possible collisions roughly 8 million times, and in 243,977 cases active steering or braking interventions helped avoid a potential crash.

New functions on the driving side

Several of the functions are new or substantially reworked. An emergency steering intervention can now automatically steer around an obstacle while keeping the car in its own lane — BMW gives the example of a pedestrian stepping into the road between two parked vehicles, or a cyclist missed in poor light — and the company states this capability is currently unique among competitors. The same function also works against side-impact risk, applying a brief steering input away from an encroaching vehicle when it detects enough space to manoeuvre.

The Emergency Brake Assistant with evasive steering support targets imminent head-on collisions and can brake up to full deceleration. Improved sensors extend it to animals on the road and wildlife crossings. The Road Priority Warning now projects recognised traffic signs into the BMW Panoramic Vision display in the driver’s field of view, covering red lights, yield, stop and no-entry signs and, new here, crosswalk warnings. The Attentiveness Assistant with emergency stop addresses medical emergencies: if the driver camera concludes the driver is no longer fit to drive, the car takes temporary control, brings itself to a controlled stop, switches on the hazard lights and triggers an eCall. The driver can override it at any point.

Parking and manoeuvring

Active Park Distance Control uses ultrasonic sensors and surround-view cameras to stop the car when it detects stationary or moving objects, and for the first time brakes for side obstacles as well as at the rear. Reversing out of a parking space is covered by an emergency braking function for cross-traffic, using rear side radars plus the rearview camera and a bird’s-eye view on the Central Display.

Standard start monitoring is aimed at pedal confusion. If the system spots an obstacle less than one metre away at speeds up to 2 km/h (1 mph) while the accelerator is pressed unusually fast and hard, it brakes the car to a stop, forwards or backwards.

The hardware behind it

All new active safety, automated driving and automated parking functions run on a central water-cooled high-performance computer BMW calls the “Superbrain of Automated Driving”, which the company says has around 20 times the computing power of the previous system. Visualisations reach the driver through the improved Assisted View display in BMW Operating System X, shown on the Central Display, Panoramic Vision or the optional 3D Head-Up Display.

Much of the validation work happened at BMW’s Future Mobility Development Center in Sokolov, Czech Republic, which opened in 2023. At roughly 600 hectares it is the group’s largest proving ground worldwide, with about 25 km (16 miles) of test tracks covering urban traffic, motorway driving and automated parking.

What it means

The competitive point here is less about any single function than about where they sit on the price list. Advanced assistance features are commonly sold as optional packages across the premium segment, so making exit warning with door delay, emergency steering intervention and start monitoring standard removes a decision — and a cost — from the buyer. The dooring feature in particular addresses a hazard that has drawn growing regulatory and municipal attention in European cities with heavy cycling traffic.

BMW also points to an independent result: the new iX3 took five stars in Euro NCAP’s latest test and was among the first vehicles assessed under the protocols fundamentally revised in 2026, with scores the company says significantly exceeded the required thresholds.

The systems are already on sale in the BMW iX3, with the i3, X5 and 7 Series to follow as those models arrive.
